Why Compete?

Speech contests are a Toastmasters tradition. Each year thousands of Toastmasters compete in the Humorous, Evaluation, Tall Tales, Table Topics and International speech contests. Competition begins with club contests and winners continue competing through the area, division and district levels. The International competition has two additional levels — semifinal and the World Championship of Public Speaking®.

Here are the top 5 reasons you should compete this year:

  1. I’m a beginner.”
Don’t feel like you have a chance to win? Contests are just another opportunity to complete a manual speech or Pathways project. Compete and develop your speaking skills faster.
  2. “I’m scared.”
Does your stomach flip flop just thinking about competing in a contest? Remember – getting outside your comfort zone is why you joined Toastmasters. Compete and see your confidence soar.
  3. I’m a bit lazy.”
We’ve all given speeches that was thrown together at the last moment. Contests push you to prepare and practice your speeches. Compete and build the right habits.
  4. I’m competitive.”
Do you thrive off competition? Contests give you the opportunity to participate outside of your club to see how you stack up against your peers. Compete and tap into your desire to win.
  5. I’m a seasoned speaker.”
We all have a message to share. Contests are an opportunity to craft a message that impacts the audience deeply and provides profound value to them. Compete and find your voice.

Volunteer Today

It takes a village of Toastmasters to plan and provide officer training and conferences, just like planning a special event at your home club.  The Conference Chairs and Toastmasters Leadership Institute (TLI) Dean work cooperatively with a team of committee chairs and their volunteers on:

  • Logistics
  • Registration
  • Leadership training
  • Education programs
  • Evaluations
  • Publicity
  • Hospitality
  • Room Management
  • Decorations (conference only)
  • Credentials for the District Council Meeting (conference only)
  • Pre- and post-conference celebrations (conference only)
  • Contests (conference only)
  • And much more!

You can start by volunteering for a Toastmasters District event with an hour or two, or joining the Conference team. No matter how much time you can commit, we would love to help you reach your personal improvement goals as you volunteer and contribute to others.
